Why Not Study Online- What Are the Disadvantages?
As great and convenient as online degrees are, we wouldn't be fair if we did not list their drawbacks. Here are some of the most frequently cited disadvantages of studying online.
*You don't get the benefit of direct interaction with other students. However, most online schools offer the opportunity to chat with classmates and share projects and information. You will be able to talk to your teachers online, and by fax, video conference, phone and email. Despite its drawbacks, technology has made it easier to learn and interact with others without ever setting foot in a classroom.
*Some believe that studying online does not allow you to use your verbal skills. However, every time you ask a question of a classmate or your instructor, or type up a paper, you are sharpening your communication skills. The modern workplace is dependent on interaction by email and Web, and studying online perfects your ability to communicate efficiently.
*The lack of a definite completion date is a drawback for those that lack the self discipline and motivation to do it themselves. A lot of people start courses, but never finish. However, most online schools work on a semester-based system, so there are still deadlines in place in most cases.
*Some employers don't believe that online degree plans are as intensive as campus-based courses. However, with a closer examination of syllabi and course descriptions, these employers can see that goals and content are pretty much the same. By applying to an accredited school you will get the same quality education you'd get if you went to class.
*Some worry that the credits they earn online may not be transferable to a bricks-and-mortar school. Every college has its own criteria by which it transfers credits, which are based on the course content, exit competencies, and the granting school's reputation.
Those looking to get an online degree may miss some excellent opportunities if they bypass degree programs that are partially campus based and partially online or through correspondence. To be sure you are getting the education you need, you should check out all your online degree options. More and more schools are offering online degree programs, and if your favorite school does not have an online program, ask if it will be developing one.
