Online MBA Degrees Explained
An MBA is a graduate-level degree, a Master's in business administration. The MBA is a very sought-after degree for those working in the corporate world or those who run a business. Other graduate degree programs are entered into right after a person earns their undergraduate degree, but if you are trying to earn an MBA, you will need several years' worth of business experience first. Because of this, a lot of people decide to remain in their current job while attending an online MBA degree program.
The first step toward earning an online MBA degree is to get admitted to one of the many schools that offer the program. Of course, you will first need to earn your undergraduate degree, and you will first need the abovementioned business experience. Most students get their undergraduate degrees in a business-related field, but this isn't a strict requirement if you have previous business experience. The most important thing for you to do is to select a program that fits your needs; many online MBA degree programs have a focus on management, marketing or finance.
Whichever online MBA program you choose, you need to make sure it is accredited. There are different agencies that handle accreditation for regional, professional and distance learning programs. There are six agencies that handle regional accreditation, and professional accreditation is given by the AACSB and the DETC (Distance Education and Training Council). Once you've selected an online MBA degree program, you will need to determine the school's specific requirements. Some schools may not require that you first earn an undergraduate business degree, but they will have certain course prerequisites. Many online schools require that you keep a certain GPA, or achieve high scores on standardized tests. If you are foreign and want to attend a US-based online MBA program, you will probably have to achieve a set score on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).
